Definition
The number of mobile charge carriers—electrons, holes or both—present per unit volume of a semiconductor material.
Application
Used to characterize doping and electrical behavior because carrier concentration strongly influences conductivity, resistivity, depletion behavior and device current; it is commonly measured by Hall-effect techniques.
