Definition
The controlled formation of a large crystalline semiconductor body from purified source material while maintaining the desired crystal structure, orientation, composition and defect level.
Application
Used to produce silicon and other semiconductor ingots that are later sliced into wafers. Silicon manufacturing commonly uses Czochralski or float-zone growth, with pull rate, thermal conditions, rotation and dopant addition controlled to achieve target wafer properties.
