Definition
A dopant impurity that can donate an electron to the semiconductor conduction band, leaving an ionized positive center; electrically active donors contribute electrons and can produce n-type conductivity when their contribution exceeds compensation by acceptors.
Application
Used to create n-type regions and control electron concentration in semiconductor devices; phosphorus and arsenic are common donor dopants in silicon, with dose, profile and electrical activation selected for the target device region.
