Definition
The rapid transfer of accumulated electrostatic charge between objects at different electrical potential, commonly through direct contact or dielectric breakdown such as a spark through air.
Application
Controlled in semiconductor fabs, handling, assembly and test because an ESD transient can damage sensitive device structures or upset electronics; mitigation includes grounding, charge control, protected work areas and ESD-safe handling.
