Definition
The Fermi level is the electron chemical potential of a material; at thermal equilibrium it is the energy at which the Fermi-Dirac occupation probability is one-half. Its position relative to semiconductor band edges reflects carrier statistics and shifts with doping, temperature, and electrostatic conditions.
Application
Device engineers use the Fermi level to analyze carrier concentrations, junction equilibrium, band bending, work-function relationships, and contact/interface behavior in semiconductor devices.
