Definition
A FinFET is a non-planar field-effect transistor in which the channel is formed in a narrow vertical fin and the gate wraps around multiple sides of the fin, improving electrostatic control of the channel compared with a planar MOSFET.
Application
FinFET architectures enabled continued CMOS scaling by reducing short-channel leakage and improving gate control at advanced process nodes; they have been widely used in high-performance logic before the industry's transition toward gate-all-around structures.
