Definition
The control electrode of a field-effect transistor; its voltage controls source-to-drain conduction through an electric field that modulates the channel. In MOSFETs, an insulating gate dielectric separates the gate electrode from the semiconductor.
Application
Used as the transistor's primary switching/control terminal in CMOS and other FET technologies.
