Definition
A three-terminal transistor formed from two p-n junctions and three semiconductor regions—emitter, base and collector—in which both electron and hole carrier transport participate in device operation.
Application
Used for analog amplification, switching, RF and selected power functions where transconductance, gain, noise or current-handling characteristics make bipolar devices advantageous, including BiCMOS circuits.
