Definition
The transverse dimension of a transistor channel, measured perpendicular to the source-to-drain current-flow direction; in planar MOSFET equations it is commonly denoted W.
Application
Used with channel length to set device drive strength and geometry in MOSFET modeling and layout. Increasing effective width generally increases available channel current for a given bias and technology.
