Definition
The distribution of allowed electronic states as a function of energy—typically expressed as the number of states available within an energy interval, often normalized by material volume.
Application
Used to calculate and interpret carrier populations, Fermi-level behavior, band occupancy, optical response and electrical transport in semiconductors; DOS changes with dimensionality, band structure and localized or defect states.
