Definition
A range of allowed electron energy states in a solid; in a semiconductor, the filled or nearly filled valence band and the higher-energy conduction band are separated by a forbidden bandgap.
Application
Used in semiconductor band diagrams and device physics to analyze carrier excitation, conduction, doping, junction behavior, optical absorption and how material band structure affects electronic devices.
