Definition
An intermetallic compound (IMC) is a distinct compound or ordered phase formed from two or more metallic elements with a characteristic composition and crystal structure.
Application
In semiconductor and electronics packaging, IMC layers form at solder/metallization interfaces; their formation and growth are monitored because they affect joint microstructure, stress, diffusion behavior, and reliability.
