Definition
A paired carrier state created when an electron occupies an available conduction-band state while the corresponding vacancy in the valence band behaves as a positively charged hole.
Application
Used to describe carrier generation and recombination in semiconductor devices such as photodiodes, image sensors, solar cells and avalanche detectors, and to analyze how optical or electrical excitation changes carrier populations.
